Three of the Four Gospels {Matthew, Mark, Luke} lists the names of the Twelve Apostles. Not counting amongst them Judas who betrayed The Lord, if we enumerate the *names* of the Eleven over the Three Gospels (3 sets of 11 = 33) we arrive at a value of 40.

MATTHEW
Chapter 10

And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them authority against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these;
1. The first, [Simon 1], who is called [Peter 2],
2. and [Andrew 3] his brother;
3. [James 4] the son of Zebedee,
4. and [John 5] his brother;
5. [Philip 6], and
6. [Bartholomew 7];
7. [Thomas 8], and
8. [Matthew 9] the publican;
9. [James 10] the son of Alphaeus,
10. and [Lebbaeus 11], the one called [Thaddaeus 12];
11. [Simon 13] the Canaanite,
and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

MARK
Chapter 3

And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him, and that He might send them forth to preach, And to have authority to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
1. And [Simon 14] He surnamed [Peter 15];
2. And [James 16] the son of Zebedee,
3. and [John 17] the brother of James; and to whom He gave the name [Boanerges 18], which is, [The sons of thunder 19]:
4. And [Andrew 20],
5. and [Philip 21], and
6. [Bartholomew 22], and
7. [Matthew 23], and
8. [Thomas 24], and
9. [James 25] the son of Alphaeus,
10. and [Thaddaeus 26],
11. and [Simon 27] the Canaanite,
And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed Him: and they went into an house.

LUKE
Chapter 6

And it came to pass in those days, that He went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called unto Him His disciples: and of them He chose twelve, whom also He named apostles;
1. [Simon 28], whom He also named [Peter 29],
2. and [Andrew 30] his brother,
3. [James 31] and
4. [John 32],
5. [Philip 33] and
6. [Bartholomew 34],
7. [Matthew 35] and
8. [Thomas 36],
9. [James 37] the son of Alphaeus,
10. and [Simon 38] called [Zelotes 39],
11. And [Judas 40] the brother of James,
and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

Alternatively, if we count the distinct persons mentioned in each of the Three Gospels, we again arrive at a value of 40. Thus we count the 11 Apostles and include also the relatives of the Apostles who are also mentioned.
